Popular Events

Like any other popular Algarve city, Lagos has its local and foreign popular seasons. While for most tourists that visit the Algarve, Summer is “the event” they were looking for, to locals things can be a bit different. One of the seasons mostly all “Algarvians” look forward are the popular saints festivities that often happen in very early Summer.

Annual Popular Events in Lagos

Although there is usually an ongoing agenda filled with cultural events at Lagos Cultural Centre. The Annual events are usually what gives life to the city and brings locals to the streets.

Banho 29

Festa do Banho 29 takes place on the 29th August. This ritual recalls the ancient tradition of the people moving to the beach and bathe up around midnight; this reflects the belief that during this particular day, the devil was on the loose, and it was considered unsafe to shower before the day was over. The most popular beaches where this event takes place are Batata beach and Meia Praia, the latter usually hosting large crowds of people until dawn.

Popular Saints Festivities

Popular Saints Festivities happen in June, usually on the 9th, 12nd and 26th of the month. You will be able to taste the famous sardines, snails and traditional beverages.

Festa de São Gonçalo de Lagos

São Gonçalo is the patron saint of the municipality and it’s celebrated on the 27th of October.

Festas da Nossa Senhora da Luz

This event is celebrated every year on 8th of September in Vila da Luz, the traditional festivities in Honor of Nossa Senhora da Luz.

Local Market Day in Lagos

Lagos Monthly market: Happens on the 1st Saturday of each month near the Municipal Stadium. All sorts of goods are sold, from clothes to fruits and vegetables.

Odiáxere Monthly Market: Happens on the 4th Monday of each month near Largo do Moinho.
