Palmares Golf Course

Onyria Palmares in Lagos, opened in May 2011 after a renovation and expansion from the old original 18-hole course (going back to 1975 and designed by Frank Pennink), then recorded in the same year direct entry to the 26th place the ranking of the best courses in Continental Europe by the Golf World magazine.

These stunning 27 holes designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., the sea, the lagoon, Monchique mountains and the cities of Alvor and Lagos are almost always within sight. The three sets of nine holes that take place on land in the amphitheater of the sea, provide as many possible combinations of 18 and have the distinction of being different between them.

Alvor route comprises holes 1 to 9. Located north, leads players through corridors lined by pinewoods, through natural slopes and valleys. In the final part, are some dunesland style holes, a first introduction to the golf links that awaits players ahead. The Lagos route, from 10 to 18, begins with the same wooded character — tall pine trees, almond trees and other species in the region — and incorporates the only two water hazards. Here too, a few holes are played through the dunes, in particular 16 and 17. The green of the 17 has the distinction of being double, that is, shared by two holes (17 and 21).

The Lagos return of 19-27, concludes climbing back to the club house and then it’s time to meet the third loop, called Praia (Beach). Opens downward trough a pine forest and then it suddenly enters the dune area, only coming out in the second half of the 27th and final hole. The railway has to be crossed trough a tunnel. On the Beach, there are four holes.

Palmares Golf in Lagos is surrounded with its tall pine trees, almond trees and other natural species of the region. This course incorporates the only two existing lakes in the field, a par 3 – 12 hole, and a par 4 – 15 hole. The 7 and 8 holes take players through extensive dunes located southwest of the field. The return path follows the rise to the clubhouse, making a change to the scenery composed of native vegetation and pine forest.
