Espiche Golf Course

The construction of the Espiche Golf in Lagos, began in the early 90s, but soon it would be choked and only resumed slowly in 2007, with new and successive obstacles. For bureaucratic reasons, and although it was ready for some time, the opening only happened in 2012.

Designed by the South African Peter Sauerman, the course is an environmental zone, so the player is always in contact with nature, and almost wild surroundings of trees (olive, almond and fig trees), bushes and vines with Serra de Monchique as a backdrop on the horizon.

The field has the first 9 holes on the side of the village of Espiche and the second round facing the hills of the interior; gently wavy, it’s great to play on foot. The main difficulties are the bunkers (fairway and protection of the greens) and dog legs, not to mention the possibility of hitting the side bushes.

With 5.862 meters from the white tees (there are still yellow and red outputs), par-72, the field has a strategic provision requiring careful thought and good planning of the swing. The hills and dog legs frequently require skill and subtlety for each shot. The fairways can be wide or narrow, and the greens are big and wavy. The first par-5, on the 4th hole, down about 80 meters from the tee before climbing again to the same height, gives an idea of the views around us and the next challenges yet to come.

The 10th hole, another par-5, is certainly one of the ex libris of the field. The player may be tempted to go for the green in two strokes, but this is a risk to be taken into account because the fairway gets progressively tighter as you approach the green.

Espiche Golf Course is located in a natural reserve, providing a great golfing experience in a beautiful natural environment. Architect Peter Sauerman conceived the form filed in order to allow a harmonious integration into the surrounding landscape.

Golfers who value diversity, charm and challenge in the game can experience the many subtleties of this par 72 course. The player is required to use a variety of techniques and a smart game is both necessary and rewarded.
