Lagos Churches

Lagos became an important city during the Portuguese discoveries. Although the “champion of Churches” is definitely Tavira — with a total count of 37 –, Lagos offers you a few of them too besides the famous beaches, the natural monument of Ponta da Piedade, and whether you are with children or not, the Zoo is definitely a favourite.

São Sebastião is one of the most interesting options for tourists; it was built on the remains of an ancient shrine in honor of Nossa Senhora da Conceição. Its origin comes from the 14th and 16th centuries.

Tradition and culture is very important in the city of Lagos. The 4 churches we tell you about are all rich in historical events, were occupied, changed, swapped “owners”, were damaged by earthquake and fire.

We believe if you visit Lagos, work on your tan on the most beautiful beach in Portugal (Praia Dona Ana), visit MJ’s Bar for a drink, have a great lunch at Quay Lagos restaurant, you will certainly want to see a church or two, so you can have a complete experience in this friendly, lively and much preferred Algarve city.
